ABOUT US

Barb Asselin is a stay-at-home Mom, college professor and writer.

When Barb and her husband, Mike, decided to have children, they had heard about teaching babies sign language in order to alleviate the frustration that babies feel when they are unable to communicate their needs.  Thinking that the idea made a lot of sense, Barb and Mike researched and learned American Sign Language to the extent that they were comfortable teaching it to their children.

On May 15, 2002, their first daughter, Casey, was born and the journey into sign language began.  Despite the fact that their family and friends thought they were "out there", Barb and Mike continued to teach Casey different signs that represented the important aspects of her life.

They were rewarded for their hard work when Casey was 6 months old and made her first sign, "milk".  All of a sudden, there was no guessing involved - and no crying!  When Casey wanted milk, she simply signed "milk".  More signs followed.

By the time Casey was talking, she had a vocabulary of 80 words - 40 signs and 40 spoken words.  It was incredible!

Barb and Mike were so inspired and impressed by Casey's adaptability to American Sign Language, they did the same thing with their second daughter, Jamie.

Barb started this website in order to help other parents make the journey from frustration to communication with their babies, infants and toddlers.

American Sign Language certainly allowed her to enjoy every minute of raising her children - you can too.
