AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE ARTICLES

Are Baby Signs and American Sign Language the Same Thing?

Yes.  The baby sign language used in our products are the exact same signs you will see in any book or course on American Sign Language.

There are a number of reason why the signs you use with your baby should be actual American Sign Language signs:

  • You and your baby will be learning a new language.  If you choose to "make up" your own signs, you will still benefit, however, once you stop using the "made up" signs, you will have lost that knowledge.  If, however, you use actual signs from American Sign Language, you will be well on your way to learning a new language and skill that you can continue to use over and over again in your life.  I can't tell you how many times I have encountered a deaf person or child and I was very grateful for the little bit of American Sign Language that I knew which allowed me to communicate.
  • Using American Sign Language with your baby is becoming more and more popular.  If you want your baby to be able to communicate with others using these techniques, you need to use the actual signs.
  • Many daycares and preschool facilities are now embracing American Sign Language in their curriculum.  By teaching your child American Sign Language, you are giving them a head start in communicating with their daycare providers and preschool teachers, as well as the other children in the daycare and preschool.
  • Research shows that children between the ages of 0-6 are prime candidates for learning new languages.  The more exposure they can get during this time frame, the more this area of their brain will develop and the quicker they can learn.  This argument works for American Sign Language as well as any other languages you speak in your home (i.e., French, German, Italian, Armenian, Greek, Arabic, etc.).  Even a few words can open up and whole new world of learning for your baby.

For all of these reasons, the baby sign language used in our products will always be the true American Sign Language.  Happy teaching!
