AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE ARTICLES

How Much Baby Sign Language do I Need to Learn to Teach it to My Baby?

A lot of people are reluctant to commit to teaching baby sign language to their baby because they see it as a big time commitment.  If you do not have any previous exposure to American Sign Language, you may feel that this is too big of an undertaking to start when you are just learning to be a parent to a new baby.

If you are one of the people that feels this way, you should know that you can teach baby sign language to your baby in only minutes a day.  You do not need to learn an entire new language in order to start - or to continue.  You can actually benefit a great deal from learning only about 10 signs and teaching those to your baby, believe it or not!

If you can learn 10 hand signals, you can teach baby sign language to your baby.  Of course, the more you learn, the more you can teach and the better you will be able to communicate with your baby.  But, if you only have time for a little bit of baby sign language, then I would suggest you learn about 10 signs that will help you communicate with your baby.

I guarantee that you will see a great improvement in your relationship with your baby.  Your baby will not have to cry to get what he or she needs from you, which will make your life much less stressful.  When you are sleep-deprived (as we all are with a new baby), it can be pretty easy to get frustrated.  Frustration is a natural feeling and it isn't anyone's fault - it is just that you and your baby are still getting to know each other and you are still working out the "communication bugs".

Learning just a few signs and introducing them to your baby will save you a lot of frustration.  More smiles all around is always a good thing!  Happy signing!
