How to Communicate
With Your Baby and Toddler Using American Sign
Language
It is very easy to teach
baby sign language to your child. Don't be
intimidated with learning a new language.
Think of it as learning a new "word" only. You
don't need to be able to have entire conservations,
you just need to be able to communicate a word or
two to start with.
First, you need to familiarize yourself with the
signs you want to teach your child. Then, you
need to be comfortable making each sign. Practice
in front of someone or the mirror.
Each time you present your baby with an item, show
them the item, say the word and make the sign, all
at the same time (or thereabouts). That way, your
child will associate that item with the word (which
they probably already do) as well as the sign, since
the sign and the word are done simultaneously.
Soon, you will find your child making the sign!
One
last thing to note – ensure you have your child’s
full attention when you are introducing and
reinforcing each sign. You want your baby to see
what you are presenting for them. You want them to
see the teddy bear, hear the words “teddy bear” and
see the sign for teddy bear. When they are crying
or otherwise distracted, it is not a good time to
“teach”. If your baby wants his or her teddy bear
and is sobbing uncontrollably for it, appease him or
her with the teddy bear. Once they are hugging it
and happy again and you have their attention, point
to the bear, say, “teddy bear” and make the sign for
teddy bear. |
