NaNoWriMo

A friend of mine told me about NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and I decided to join.

NaNoWriMo is a free community for writers who are committed to writing a novel (or, in my case, a non-fiction book) during the month of November.  You sign up for a free account and declare your intention to write a book in November.  The default setting is 50,000 words, but you could write as much or as little as you want.

The goal of 50,000 words is broken up into 1,667 words per day.

I have a series of books for authors on social media that I have been trying to write for a few months now and I just haven’t made the time between work, family, house, friends, and everything else.  I am hoping that joining this community will give me the motivation I need to just start – and hopefully finish.

Here are some of the things I really like about this website and community:

  • there are local communities all over the place and I even found one in Ottawa with lots of members that are organizing meet and greets and other social events during the month
  • there are “badges” you earn for certain goals that are met
  • you can have “buddies” that will help you reach your goals
  • each region has coaches that will motivate your area to reach its goals
  • lots of writing tips and motivational posts
  • probably lots more that I haven’t found yet

For me, 50,000 words seems like an insurmountable amount of words to write in a month, but here is how I am going to approach it:

  • find some time each day when I can write
  • actually write during this time (no emails or phones, etc.)
  • don’t worry about writing perfectly or even trying to proofread – the point is just to write
  • know that I will proofread in December – NOT November 🙂

If anyone feels like joining NaNoWriMo, please add me as a “buddy” so we can help each other meet our goals.  You can sign up here:
